Science Club for Girls
Science Club for Girls is a free after-school and Saturday program that brings the excitement of science and engineering to girls from kindergarten to 12th grade, by connecting them with mentor-scientists and hands-on explorations. Girls in 8-12th grades serve as co-teachers in science clubs, learn leadership and life skills, and explore careers in STEM. We target girls who are underrepresented in science and engineering and who typically do not have access to STEM enrichment programs. Our sites are based in Cambridge, Boston, Lawrence, Framingham and Newton.
Boston Partners in Education
Boston Public School Students Need YOU!Are you looking for something to break up your work day that will allow you to give back to your community? The 2008-2009 academic school year is in full swing and Boston Partners in Education is looking for volunteers to tutor and mentor Boston Public School students. You don’t need any previous tutoring experience to participate—just a willingness to work with students and help them reach for their highest potential!
Our volunteers work with one student during the school day and in some after school and Saturday morning programs for one hour (or more) each week. Opportunities are available in all grades, K-12, in the areas of math and literacy. During the application process, we provide training in mentoring and tutoring, as well as a personal interview and a reference check to ensure a successful experience. Volunteers must attend the interview and training at Boston Partners in Education’s office before beginning their volunteer assignment.
To register, visit www.bostonpartners.org and complete the volunteer registration form (click on “For Volunteers” then on “Registration Form”). For more information, please contact Hillary Chazen, Recruitment Manager, at (617) 451-6145 or hillary_chazen@bostonpartners.org.
Engineering is Elementary: Engineering and Technology Lessons for Children, Museum of Science, Boston
The Engineering is Elementary (EiE) project aims to foster engineering and technological literacy among children. EiE is creating a research-driven, standards-based, and classroom-tested curriculum for grades 1-5 that integrates engineering and technology concepts and skills with elementary science topics. EiE lessons not only promote K-12 science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) learning, but also connect with literacy and social studies. EiE needs your help supporting teachers in their efforts to teach about engineering and technology. This can by done by adopting a school or district and supporting teachers in purchasing curriculum and materials. In addition, teachers may welcome in classroom support of curriculum implementation as well as district wide support of professional development for teachers about engineering and technology. If you’re interested in an EiE initiative already underway, please see our Lexington Opporutunities page for information about the Lexington EiE pilot project.
SAT Vocab Video Contest
We are MIT alums looking to make prepping for the SATs fun and for all, by throwing a contest in which kids compete to make entertaining videos teaching SAT vocabulary. The contestant whose video receives the most number of votes from viewers will win $600 for his or her school. We just received a community service grant but still need lots of help! Including volunteers to help build a website where kids can upload, view, and vote on videos (see www.BrainyFlix.com to see current progress), and volunteers to help market the contest online and out reach to high schools and middle schools. For the most part, everything is in its nascent stage. We need someone who can make this thing grow! And we’re also still looking for a non-profit to belong to. Please adopt us!
